Along the rocky shores of the Atlantic lies a city set around a hill. Walking its streets, you see glimpses of the past in the graveyards, churches, and forts, and visions of the future in the cranes, concrete, and construction crews. The bright and cheery facade presented by the modern city can easily draw you in. But if you were to shift your focus to peer behind it, what secrets might you uncover? Tales of war and piracy, sickness and death, smugglers and thieves, crime and punishment; a city built out of fear, lies, and violence. A hidden history that stretches 270 years into the past!
Welcome to Halifax.
Hidden Halifax History is a unique walking tour that leads you through the city’s forgotten past. Come explore the gritty realities of life in Halifax, from its founding in 1749 to the twentieth century, and marvel at some tales too grim, ghastly, or downright ridiculous for the history books. Starting along the Halifax Waterfront and looping through the downtown, the tour runs approximately an hour and a half and lets you see the city’s premier sights in a whole new light.
Nathan Stone is your guide on this journey. Armed with a love of storytelling and years of public speaking experience, Nathan is an animated and enthusiastic host. He is excited to be able to offer this one-of-a-kind look into the Halifax of yesterday and more than happy to share the city’s dirty secrets with you!

Where do tours depart from?
Tours start at the Halifax Waterfront, by the Visitor Information Centre at the bottom of Sackville Street.
How long is the tour?
Tours are roughly two hours.
How much do tours cost?
$15.00 for adults and $10.00 for children under 12.
Is there an age limit for the tour?
There is no age limit, however parents may wish to use their discretion. Many of the stories involve violence, death, and alcohol. Sometimes all three at the same time!
Do you offer private tours?
Absolutely! If you would like to book a private tour for your group, please contact us to organize the details.
Inclement Weather Policy
Unfortunately, we cannot control the weather and where the tours take place outside we are at Mother Nature’s mercy. Tours may be cancelled if the weather is deemed too poor. All cancellations will be announced 2 hours before tours are set to depart, and will be posted on our schedule page as well as on social media. We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope you will be able to join us for a tour in fairer weather.
